ok, to begin with, dan, i'm not putting jokes in here, it's not a funny topic ....anyway...
since the beginning, there has always been that one thing we can't do, and it's always what we do. it is inevitable. it must happen, and it cannot be stopped. in the case of man, through the deception of Satan, the "forbidden fruit" gave us the knowledge of good and evil, which in turn became our mortal bane and cast us from paradise into the world. now the gates to eden are locked, flanked by seraphim, and guarded with the revolving sword of fire. basically, we're not getting back in.
so take a modern day example. drugs. a plant, a, "forbidden fruit", if you wish. we know it hurts us. we know it kills us. but for one cheap thrill we take the chance. we run the gauntlet. people laugh at the game of russion rullete, "no way! i have one chance in six of getting killed! you must be crazy!" tell them to check the odds with drugs. yet here's the key point: the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil wasn't harmful to us, God simply didn't want us to have it, it actually did us some good by allowing us to discern evil from good, but drugs DO harm us, and they scew our perspectives and permenatly damage our minds. once you begin, there is no turning back. once you cross, the bridge is burned. and yet day after day, we return to these things, these poisens, in all reality commiting suicide bit by bit.
no salve can cleanse the wound within, no bandage hold back floods of blood, and so too can medicine only do so much. no one thinks that they can get hurt until they do, and then it is too late. people need to know, and once they do, they need to put it into practice.
we live in a poisened world, and we must be the cure.
